Osteopath in Henleaze shares advice for better back health in 2025

(1.5 minute read)

As the year comes to a close, patients often ask me as an experienced osteopath in Henleaze for better back health advice - this is so important to consider in 2025.

At my osteopathic clinic in Henleaze, I see many patients suffering from back and neck pain each year. For many, it is due to poor sitting and in many cases avoidable.

Why is back health so important?

Incorrect sitting and poor posture in Bristol are major problems, with many people of all ages across Henleaze and the city suffering from bad ongoing back health as a result.

Sitting position is critical for back health

As a leading osteopath in Henleaze, I often remind patients that the human body is not well designed for sitting for long periods. We are designed to move, and often.

I believe that the modern chair industry is failing by providing poor seating that is detrimental to back health.

Effective and ergonomic chairs are hard to find, and usually expensive.

What is wrong with standard seating?

Most contemporary chairs have a horizontal seat section that we sit on.

When we sit, the position of our pelvis changes (usually, it rolls backwards) and the natural  healthy curvature of the spine is reduced or lost completely.

Our postural muscles fatigue over time, leading to a backwards slouch position (the spine becomes C-shaped).

This loads the spine and discs in a detrimental way, and is a significant cause of back pain, disc injury, and disablement in the neck and low back.

What can be done to improve back health in 2025

At my osteopathic clinic in Henleaze, I try to get patients to think about sitting and posture in a different way to encourage better back health.

Better, more active sitting in a way that promotes good posture is much healthier for the back.

I was so frustrated by poor seating solutions in Bristol that I designed a simple, posture-promoting chair, called The Z Chair.

My top tips for better back health

Sitting less, standing more, and moving more are the best and easiest ways to promote better back health in 2025.

Micro-breaking is an effective way to prevent back issues. Get up and move every 20-30 minutes. Read more about the benefits of micro-breaks here.
